What is IndieTips?
IndieTips is a website dedicated to demystifying the entire filmmaking process, from pre-production to the release of your short film. As implied by the name, the website primarily serves no-budget and low-budget filmmakers, helping them advance in their filmmaking journey. However, we also cover all aspects of the creative trade. The idea behind IndieTips was to create a resource that shares tips and tricks from a team of filmmakers who understand the challenges many filmmakers face as they strive to reach the next step in their careers.
Who Runs IndieTips?
IndieTips is run by Lewis McGregor, a filmmaker-photographer hybrid from Wales. Lewis is also a seasoned content writer, having written hundreds of tutorials, reviews, and news articles on the latest filmmaking information and technology for countless esteemed publications, including Shutterstock, Maxon, Aputure, PremiumBeat, Envato, and more.
Besides Lewis, our team includes a diverse group of working motion graphic artists, filmmakers, and audio specialists who share their expertise with you. Our goal is to prioritize contributors who are primarily working creative professionals rather than just content writers. This approach guarantees that the advice and tips provided are rooted in practical experience and real-world application.
Is IndieTips a New Website?
IndieTips was established in 2013 and has undergone many iterations since then. Initially created as a platform to share bite-sized, notebook-friendly filmmaking tips, the website has evolved into a more traditional publishing platform.
What Happened to a Lot of Your Older Content?
As mentioned, IndieTips was created in 2013 by Lewis McGregor with the goal of offering bite-sized tips—truly bite-sized, often no longer than a single tweet. At that time, this approach was not problematic. However, as the website grew and as Google’s evaluation criteria for content changed, such brief content was no longer valued highly. Consequently, in 2018, we purged much of the content that we, too, considered to be somewhat obsolete.
How Can I Contribute to IndieTips?
If you’re a filmmaker, writer, or industry expert with valuable insights and experiences to share, we welcome contributions! However, we do not accept posts that lack substance or are submitted merely for the sake of placing a backlink on our website. Please use the contact form here to get in touch.
Do You Offer Video Tutorials?
Our alumni include former writers and creators for PremiumBeat and Shutterstock, platforms where we successfully established two YouTube channels with a combined subscriber count of over 500,000. While our tutorial channel is currently dormant, you can find it here, and you can expect the same quality tutorials that made those channels successful to resume later this year.
How Often Is New Content Published on IndieTips?
We aim to publish new content multiple times a week, ensuring that at least three new tips are shared with our audience each week.
Is There a Way to Subscribe to IndieTips Updates?
Yes, you can subscribe to our weekly newsletter here. By subscribing, you’ll receive the latest tips, tutorials, and news from IndieTips directly in your inbox.
